Arming Women Against Rape & Endangerment

Defensive Aerosol Spray (Pepper Spray)

Oleoresin Capsicum (also called OC, or pepper spray) is a safe, effective, less-than-lethal self-defense tool that has been proved safe in decades of law enforcement use. When sprayed in the face of an attacker, it causes his eyelids to slam shut or spasm, dilates blood vessels, causes intense coughing and choking (while still allowing him to breathe).

During this course, you will:

  • Learn what pepper spray is, how and why it works

  • Understand differences in concentration, canister size, delivery system, and other features

  • Learn what to look for on the label of a good product

  • Understand how to carry it (and how not to), and how to use it

  • Learn for what sorts of people and situations it is (or isn't) effective

  • Learn how to use it to temporarily disable assailants

  • Understand what to do if you get some on yourself

  • Practice in realistic scenarios using mint-scented spray

  • Understand the (Massachusetts) licensing requirements, and where to purchase OC

  • Take home a can of inert "practice spray"
